Episode 26 | Oilfield Opportunity | Scott Energy Technologies

I am a huge fan of anything that will reduce waste, especially in the oilfield sector. As we explored in the Capstone episode, flare gas can be used for power. In the Select episode, we learned that frackwater can be recycled rather than using more surface water.

Scott Energy Technologies, a Longview, TX-based services company, can recycle drill "cuttings," and convert them into road-based materials. In my experience, most roads used for oilfield operations are either dirt or caliche. By recycling and using drill cuttings instead, oilfield operators avoid a huge disposal cost and a road material expense.

For this episode, I spoke with Blake Scott, president of Scott Energy. The company has been around for about 20 years. One of the topics we covered was, do oilfield operators try new solutions 1) when oil prices are great and there is money to spend on new technologies, or 2) when oil prices are bad and operators are trying to save money? The answer could be a new economic theorem.

We also discussed regulations in different oilfield sectors around the country. Personally, I always thought northeastern states were too sensitive when it comes to regulations, but an insight Blake shares from a Pennsylvania state regulator honestly changed my perception about the way some of these regions think.

Blake is a finalist for Platts Global Energy Awards - CEO of the Year. He is one of seven CEOs from seven countries, and we wish him the best!
