Episode 35 | Pipeline Performance | Texas Pipeline Association

A longtime friend of mine, Christian Goff, was kind enough to introduce me to the Texas Pipeline Association, the state trade association for a critical component of our nation's infrastructure.

TPA has over 40 members, representing the state with the largest number of pipeline miles in the U.S. (328K out of 1.4M).

I spoke to their president, Thure Cannon, who I likely passed during my time at the Clean Coal Technology Foundation. Thure was a staffer for a House Member on one of the House Energy Committees. During our interview I asked him how he enjoyed working with legislators in this capacity.

We also spoke about one of the most serious issues facing the association: eminent domain. Though it is always a possibility, Thure tells me landowner issues with regard to pipelines rarely, if ever, get to that point.

Texans know their property rights. I doubt there's a grandma in the whole state who isn't aware where she stands with her mineral rights. Despite a WELL-educated population, Thure says Texans understand that giving up right-of-way is critical for the success of the entire state. Plus landowners typically get a nice payment—for something they'll never see again after it's buried.
